Examination Details / Schedule

Nationality

For CDS Exam, the candidate should be a subject/citizen of any 1 of the subsequent countries/regions:
1. A Indian Citizen or
2. A subject of Nepal or
3. A subject of Bhutan
4. A Tibetan refugee who came to visit India before 01 Jan 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or
5. A person originally Indian who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Note: Provided that a candidate belonging to categories 2, 3, 4 and 5 shall be a private in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Indian government. Certificate of eligibility won’t, however, be necessary just in case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Age Limits, Gender & Marital Status

The candidate should undergo the stop dates for regulation and legal status criteria before filling the web form for CDS examination:
1. For Indian military academy (IMA): The candidate falling within the age bracket of 19 – 24 Years i.e. they're born not before January 2, 1996 & not later than January 1, 2001 only. The candidate should even be unmarried to be considered eligible.

2. For Indian naval academy (INA): The candidate falling within the age bracket of 19- 22 Years i.e. they're born not before January 2, 1996 & not later than January 1, 2001 only. The candidate for this category should even be unmarried to be considered for eligibility.

3. For Air Force Academy: Candidates born between January 2, 1996 and January 1, 2000 (Upper regulation for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA (India) is relax able up to 26 yrs. i.e. born not before January 2, 1994 and not later than January 1, 2000) are eligible for AFA.

4. For Officers’ Training Academy (SSC Course for Men): The candidate belonging within the age bracket of 19- 25 Years i.e. they're born not before January 2, 1995 & not later than January 1, 2001 are eligible. Also, here the candidate can either be married or unmarried.

5. For Officers’ Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course): the candidate belonging to age bracket of 19- 25 Years i.e. they're born not before January 2, 1995 and not later than January 1, 2001. The candidate is eligible if they're unmarried, issueless widows who haven't remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who haven't remarried.

Educational Qualification

Indian military academy (INA): Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
Indian naval academy (INA): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology from a recognized university or equivalent.
Indian Air Force Academy (AFA): Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology from a recognized university OR degree from a recognized university with Physics & Mathematics at 10+2 level.
Officers’ Training Academy (OTA): Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
Officers’ Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course): Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
Note:Candidates appearing in final year also are eligible to use for CDS Exam 2020 on provisional basis.

Physical Standards

Spinal Conditions for Air Force

Past medical history of diseases or injury of the spine or sacroiliac joints, either with or without objective signs which have prevented the candidate from successfully following a physically active life, is a case for rejection for commissioning in IAF. History of spinal fracture/prolapsed intervertebral disc and surgical treatment for these conditions will entail rejection. The following conditions detected during medical exam will disqualify a candidate’s CDS Eligibility for Air Force service.
(a) Granulomatous disease of spine
(b) Arthritis/Spondylosis
• Rheumatoid arthritis and allied disorders
• Ankylosing spondylitis
• Osteoarthrosis, spondylosis and degenerative joint diseases
• Non-articular rheumatism (e.g. lesions of the rotator cuff, tennis elbow, recurrent lumbago etc.)
• Miscellaneous disorders including SLE, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, vasculitis.
(c) Spondylolisthesis/spondylolysis/spondylosis
(d) Compression fracture of vertebrae
(e) Scheurman’s desease (Adolescent Kyphosis)
(f) Loss of cervical lordosis when associated with clinically restricted movements of the cervical spine.
(g) Unilateral/bilateral cervical ribs with demonstrable neurological or circulatroy deficit.

Physical Conditioning

Prospective candidates are advised to keep themselves in good physical condition by following the under mentioned routine:
• Running: 2 to 4 km in 15 minutes
• Pushups & Sit-ups: Minimum 20 each
• Chin ups: Min. 8
• Rope Climbing: 3 to 4 metres

Standard of Questions: Given below is that the expected standard of every section in the CDS Exam:
The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics is going to be of Matriculation level. The quality of papers in other subjects will approximately be like could also be expected of a graduate of an Indian University.
English: The question paper is going to be designed to check the candidates’ understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.
General Knowledge: general knowledge including knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and knowledge in their scientific aspects as could also be expected of an informed one that has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper also will include questions on History of India and Geography of nature which candidate should be ready to answer without special study.
Negative marking is applicable for each wrong marked answer. In CDS paper, each question carries 4 options and out of which just one option is correct. For every incorrect answer, 1/3 of the marks are going to be deducted. Quite one option marked is treated as incorrect. However, if an issue is left unanswered there'll be no negative marking. The following table explains the detailed marking scheme of the exam.
