What is CDS?

The "Combined Defence Services" (CDS) Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations are conducted in February and November respectively. Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

The candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria before applying for CDS 2 examination. Candidates should fulfill the eligibility criteria of UPSC CDS 2 2018 exam at the following levels: 1. Nationality
A candidate should be:
  1. The Citizenship of India, or
  2. The subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or
  3. Tibetan refugee who had been migrated to India before January 01, 1962 with the intention of Permanent Settle, or
  4. An individual of Indian Origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire & Vietnam for permanent settle purpose in India.

Combined Defence Service CDS (I) 2019 selection procedure is rigorous process through which candidates in fields of Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy are selected. The UPSC CDS (I) 2019 Selection Procedure mentioned in the following steps:
  • Written Examination
  • Personality Test/ Personal Interview
  • Verification of the candidates
  • Medical Examination of the selected candidates

Detailed information for the CDS (I) 2019 selection procedure:
STEP 1: Written Examination
The first step in the selection procedure of CDS (I) 2019 begins with candidates appearing for written examination which is scheduled for 03rd February 2019. The candidate opting for IMA, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy are required to give three written subjects of the following subjects:
  • English
  • General Knowledge
  • Elementary Mathematics

The candidates appearing for Officers Training Academy will have to give written test of two subjects of the following:
  • English
  • General Knowledge

STEP 2: Personality Test OR Personal Interview
The second step in the CDS 2019 Selection procedure is personality test or personal interview. A panel judges the shortlisted candidates and on the grounds of verbal and non verbal intelligence the candidates are further selected. The panel may decide to conduct a group activity, group discussion etc. The candidate’s social personality and knowledge of the current affairs and his personality are under scrutiny for this procedure.

STEP 3: Document Verification:
After the personal interview is conducted in the STEP 2 of the CDS 2018 selection procedure, the candidates are shortlisted and there all the documents for verification are required. Following is the list of documents to be submitted for verification:
  • Birth Certificate
  • Academic Degrees (HSC, SSC, Graduation etc)
  • Certificate of Eligibility for certain candidates
  • Passport size photograph
  • Identity proof
  • Residence proof etc.
  • Category or cast certificate (SC, ST, OBC, PH etc)

The exam pattern of CDS 2 2018 is divided into two sections:
  • Written Examination
  • Intelligence & Personality Test Interview

The exam pattern of CDS 2 examination is different for Officer Training Academy and Indian Naval Academy/Indian Military Academy/Indian Air Force.
CDS Exam Pattern for NAVY/ ARMY/ AIR FORCE
The exam of Indian Naval Academy/Indian Military Academy/Indian Air Force comprises of 3 papers, which carry a total of 300 marks. The total duration of each exam is 2 hours.

CDS Exam Pattern for Officer Training Academy (OTA)
The exam of Officer Training Academy (OTA) consists of 2 subjects with total 200 Marks. The duration of the two exams is 4 hours (2 hours for each exam).
